Turning Pens

Whats New

Wow! Where does the time go too?  Sadly we had to cancel the craft fair in July, this due to the drain gurgling up water onto the floor, this would have been too dangerous for our clients, so appologies all around.  We have accepted an invite to display and demonstrate at the Scottish Mobility Roadshow  17th & 18th September (see main page) so I am looking forward to seeing all our regulars at the show.  We were invited to display at the Scottich Woodworking show but due to prior commitments (I am flying away) we had to decline but as you see we are supporting it in every way we can.

CurrentNews

Friday 21st May 2010 we attended the Spinal Injuries Scotland awards lunch, the scoff was fantastic and a great bunch of folk attended.  We were honoured to have made the awards for the third year running and they were well received.

I am over the moon that we have been asked to make the awards for 2011 and I already have my thinking cap on, although it has to be said that my head is empty of ideas (nothing new there then).  The workshop has been busy and we have had a few new members, which is great.

TURNING PENS with REX & KIP

VIDEO 1&2

BASIC AND BEYOND

Kip starts this Video off and then Rex takes over with a section on the slim line basic pen, they cover the basics plus a few extra Tips and Tricks and variations on the basic pen.

I have to admit that I struggled to watch these videos all the way through.  I think it was the voices of Kip and Rex, I found them pretty boring to listen to.  I found that they stated the obvious an auful lot of the time, however to be fair to the guys if you are a beginner then its NOT stating the obvious, in which case they for sure cover all the relevant facts and add a lot of information.  They also cover the tools and their uses as well as a few tips on angles of attack for the tools.  The glues that you can use and some of the different woods as well as some peculiar materials and antler

The Second Video covers the European and Americana Rollerball style Pen and using Acrylic as well as more variations on a theme.

A bandsaw Cutting Jig

Drilling Jig

Gluing

Barrel Trimming Ideas

Repairing wood defects

Wire Burning

Disassembling a Pen

Working with Antler

Conclusion

There are some interesting facts and methods in these videos, there is a book covering the same areas and i have not checked that out, however I think that the price is going to be a lot cheaper at £6 on Amazon, to glean maybe the same information.

In all the Videos are good for what they are, although I think the whole lot could have been contained on the first video as there is a LOT of repetition.
